Reflection Room Seeks to Offer Refuge for Busy College Lives

In Fall 2014, the Reflection Room was conceived by a group of students at Raritan Valley Community College who saw the need for a safe haven from the turmoil of college life.

Since then, the Reflection Room—located behind the Game Room, across the Cafeteria—has served as an open, quiet space for students and staff at RVCC to use between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Uses include meditation, yoga classes and a space for Muslim Student Association members to pray.

Keaton Gray, President of the Reflection Room Planning Board, emphasizes the need to explore mindfulness, cultivate a sense of self-awareness and establish a stronger community at RVCC through the Reflection Room.

“To be healthy, to be self-aware, to choose compassion is another key aspect that bonds the community, and I think in any educational, work environment, it is crucial to have a space where no matter your religion, you can to go to and have a quiet reflection and take a breath,” Gray said.

Last semester, the Reflection Room Planning Board received a $900 grant from the college. This has been used for decorations, mats, pillows and tapestries.

The board is working with the athletic apparel store LuluLemon on a yoga/trunk show on April 2, 2:15-3 p.m. LuluLemon will bring healthy snacks and merchandise for students to purchase at a discount, and there will be a sign up for yoga classes in the Reflection Room.
