On February 19th the EmPoWER Family Success Center of Somerville and the Biology/Chemistry Club of Raritan Valley Community College hosted their second collaborative science-themed event, Little Scientist Family Fun Night.
With the help of the Astronomy Club, Environmental Club, and Student Life office of RVCC, the Cafeteria was transformed into an interactive science fair where children and their parents were able to participate in a multitude of hands-on science experiments. Refreshments and snacks were enjoyed while RVCC science professors performed awe-inspiring and educational demonstrations for over 120 Somerset County residents. Four lucky raffle entrants won Raritan Valley Community College merchandise while many families in attendance graciously contributed canned goods to be donated to local food banks.
Each child took home a complementary lab coat, an event program with details of each experiment, scientific souvenirs, and a greater understanding of how science is used in everyday life. “Basic science is a jumping off point [and] having this knowledge at a young age is important. It opens children's minds to the endless possibilities science can bring them now and in the future,” said Giovanna Noe, an executive board member of the Biology/Chemistry Club of RVCC. Noe also remarked that, “The Bio/Chem Club wanted to reach out to the families in the community because we believe that it is important to empower today's youth with as much knowledge about science as possible. I believe that it is important to work with the FSC because just like RVCC, they are an important part of the community”.
